How to clean up your camera roll: a calmer, five-pass method
GallerySort editorial · Updated
Before you start: protect the photos that matter
Make sure irreplaceable photos exist somewhere other than the library you are about to edit. Open a few files in that backup to check that they are accessible. Seeing a filename is less reassuring than knowing the picture opens.
Check whether your phone syncs photos to a cloud service. Sync keeps libraries consistent; it does not necessarily protect a picture from deletion. With iCloud Photos, deletions propagate across devices using the same account.
Pass one: remove pictures with an expired purpose
Begin with low-emotion decisions. A parking-space photo from a trip you finished, an outdated shopping list and a screenshot of information you already saved elsewhere are easier to judge than family pictures.
Do not treat all screenshots as rubbish. Receipts, useful instructions and personal records can be important. Move what you still need to an appropriate place before removing its photo copy.
Pass two: look for shots you would never use
Review accidental pocket photos, pictures blocked by a finger and shots too blurry to serve their purpose. Keep imperfect photos when the moment itself matters. Technical quality is not the same thing as personal value.
A simple swipe workflow can help you keep moving. GallerySort lets you review photos one by one, with a swipe to keep or delete. The point is a clear decision, not racing through your memories.
Pass three: compare repeated takes together
Choose the best expression, framing or version of a scene rather than keeping every attempt by default. Sometimes two pictures tell different stories; sometimes eight pictures tell the same one.
Similar photos are not always exact duplicates. Review people, focus and context yourself before removing repeated takes. A near-identical frame may contain the only photo where everyone has their eyes open.
Pass four: review videos when storage is the issue
If your goal is more free space, look at device storage before and after a focused cleanup. The number of deleted items is a poor measure: a long video can occupy more space than many photos.
Do not empty recovery folders reflexively. First confirm that your backup works and that you selected the right files. If you urgently need storage, understand that permanent deletion removes the normal recovery option.
Pass five: make your keepers easier to find
Add meaningful pictures to a few albums. Give an album a name you would naturally search for, such as a place, event or person. Save complex tagging systems for collections that genuinely need them.
Stop when your chosen batch is complete. A short, finished session is easier to repeat than a whole evening that leaves you exhausted. Next time, pick up with the next month or event.
