An Android gallery collects more than camera shots: screenshots, saved memes, messenger media and downloads all end up next to the photos you actually care about. Deleting them one by one in the gallery grid is tedious, and it is easy to give up halfway.

GallerySort puts one photo on screen at a time and asks a single question: keep it or let it go? You answer with a swipe, so a pile of hundreds of images turns into a series of decisions you can make in a few minutes whenever you have them.

How cleaning up your Android photos works

  1. Install GallerySort from Google Play and allow access to your photos when the app asks. That permission lets it show you the images already on your phone.
  2. Begin with a small batch instead of the full gallery. A handful of photos is enough to get comfortable with the gestures.
  3. Swipe left on photos you want to delete and right on the ones you want to keep. If you are not sure, keep the photo for now and revisit it on a later pass.
  4. Tap an album to add a keeper to it, or create a new album for a trip, a person or an event. Deciding and organizing happen together.
  5. Take a moment over any photo you are unsure about before you swipe it left, and stop when your attention fades. Short sessions work better than one marathon.

What it does not do

  • GallerySort helps you decide which photos stay. It does not promise a specific amount of freed storage, because that depends on what you remove and on how your phone handles deleted items.
  • Sorting runs locally on your device, but your backup settings still apply. If Google Photos backup or another sync is on, deleting a photo on the phone may affect the backed-up copy depending on how it is set up, so check your settings before a big cleanup.
  • Gallery apps and Google Photos often keep deleted items in a trash or bin for a while, so storage may not come back right away. Our guides below explain what to look at.
  • It is not a backup. Decide what must be kept safe before you start deleting.

Before you start

  • Find out whether Google Photos backup or another sync is turned on, since that decides how deletions behave.
  • Back up anything you would be sad to lose.
  • Choose a small batch and a short time limit, such as ten minutes.

How do I clean up photos on Android with GallerySort?

Open the app, work through a small batch of photos and swipe left on the ones you want to delete or right on the ones you want to keep. Tap an album to add a keeper to it. Take care with photos you are unsure about.

Does GallerySort upload my Android photos?

The sorting process works locally on your device. Your existing backup and sync settings, such as Google Photos backup, still apply as before.

If I delete a photo on my Android phone, is it deleted from Google Photos?

It depends on your backup and sync settings and on which app you delete from. Check your setup before a large cleanup and read our Google Photos guide for the details.

Why is my Android storage still full after deleting photos?

Deleted photos may sit in a trash or bin before they are removed for good, and other items such as videos, apps, downloads and messenger media also use space. Our storage guide walks through what to check.
