How to clean up screenshots and WhatsApp media on Android
GallerySort editorial · Updated
Why these photos pile up
Screenshots and messaging media are created without much thought. A screenshot of a ticket, a forwarded video or a chat photo has a short useful life, but it lands in the same gallery as your own pictures. Months later it makes real memories harder to find.
Start with the low-emotion decisions. An expired parking photo or an old shopping list is easier to judge than a family picture, and clearing them makes the rest of the cleanup feel less heavy.
Sort screenshots before you delete them
Do not treat every screenshot as rubbish. Tickets, receipts, addresses and instructions may be the only copy you have. Move what you still need to a better place, such as a notes app or a folder, and then delete the screenshot.
Files by Google has a Clean section with suggestion cards. Google’s help pages describe cards such as junk files and large files, and say you can move selected files to Trash. Files moved there stay in the Bin for 30 days and can be restored from Menu, then Bin.
- Open your gallery’s Screenshots album or folder.
- Review one month at a time, newest first.
- Save anything you still need somewhere searchable.
- Delete the rest, and keep the app’s trash until you are confident.
Know which delete button is permanent
In Files by Google, the Junk files card behaves differently from the large-file cards. Google’s help says files cleared with Junk files are permanently deleted and do not go to the Bin, while the large-file cards move selections to Trash first. Read each confirmation dialog before you tap.
If you back up with Google Photos, remember that a deletion made in the Photos app also removes the item from your device and from other devices with backup on. Deleting a local copy only is a separate action, covered in our guide on deleting from Android and Google Photos backup.
Tame WhatsApp media
WhatsApp can save received photos and videos to your phone, so they also show up in your gallery. WhatsApp’s help center describes a setting to stop it saving media to your phone, labelled Media visibility under Settings and Chats at the time of writing. Menu names change between versions, so check the current help article.
WhatsApp also describes a way to review media from inside a chat and delete it. Deleting media on your side removes your copy only; it does not remove the copy from the people you chatted with. Before you delete something precious, save the file or confirm that it exists elsewhere.
Make the keepers easier to find
After the clutter is gone, add the pictures you want to find again to a few albums. GallerySort lets you swipe to keep or delete and then tap an album, which can make the second step part of the same session. It is a decision tool, not a promise of how much storage you will recover.
Repeat this once a month or after a trip, reviewing only what is new. A short habit is easier than a big rescue when the storage warning appears.
