If I delete a photo on my Android phone, is it deleted from Google Photos?

GallerySort editorial · Updated

Deleting inside the Google Photos app syncs everywhere

Google’s help page says that deleting photos and videos from the Google Photos app deletes the same items from your device. If backup is on, the deletion applies to every device where backup is on. The item also disappears from your Google Photos albums, shared albums and some highlight videos.

That is the reason a cleanup in Google Photos should not be treated like clearing a cache. Backup keeps your phone and your account in step, which includes mistakes. Another phone signed into the same account is not an independent copy.

Remove only the phone copy

If your goal is space on the phone rather than fewer memories, Google offers Delete from device. Open the item, tap More and choose Delete from device. The backed-up copy stays in your Google Photos library. You can also use Free up space on this device from your profile picture to remove all eligible backed-up items at once.

Check that backup is complete first. Google’s backup page lists statuses such as Backup complete, Backing up photos, Backup paused and Backup is off, plus per-item icons. A photo that has not been backed up is not protected by that backup.

  1. Look at the backup status at the top of Google Photos or under your profile picture.
  2. Open a few photos and confirm they show as backed up.
  3. Use Delete from device or Free up space on this device for local copies.
  4. Use the regular Delete action only when you want the photo gone from the library.

Your phone’s own gallery may have its own trash. Samsung’s Gallery keeps deleted photos and videos in a Recycle bin for 30 days according to Samsung’s support page. Google’s help page says that a photo deleted from the Gallery app without being backed up first cannot be restored once it has left the trash.

Whether a deletion in a gallery app also removes the Google Photos copy depends on your device and sync settings. If you are not sure, test with one unimportant photo, then check Google Photos and its Trash before deleting in bulk.

If you deleted something by mistake

In Google Photos, tap Collections, then Trash, touch and hold the photo or video and tap Restore. Google says items in the Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, and you can only restore what is still there. Permanently deleted items cannot be restored.

Check your Gallery app’s Recycle bin too. If an item is in neither place, stop deleting and look in other backups you may have made, such as a computer or external drive.

A safer way to clean up

Make an independent copy of irreplaceable photos before a big cleanup, and open it to confirm that it works. Then sort in small batches, and pause after each one to check the result.

GallerySort lets you swipe to keep or delete and add keepers to albums. It does not change Google Photos sync, so the same care applies when you clean up with it. For a general routine, see how to clean up your camera roll.
